RMS has established a socially responsible environmental policy. Our environmental policies are consistent with the policies outlined by the EPA's Guidelines for Materials Management.
ZERO E-WASTE IN LANDFILLS - No electronic waste is sent to solid waste landfills. All e-waste is sent to qualified recyclers who follow EPA guidelines.
NO E-WASTE IS EXPORTED - No electronic waste of any kind is exported to developing countries for disposal or refining. RMS makes every conceivable effort to ensure that all downstream smelting and refining operations meet all applicable environmental regulations.
RECHARGEABLE BATTERY RECYCLING - Rechargeable batteries are processed according to EPA guidelines for the proper disposal and recycling.
CARDBOARD RECYCLING - No cardboard boxes (e.g. shipping boxes) are processed in landfills. All cardboard is responsibly recycled.
ALL RECYCLABLES - RMS makes every effort to recycle or reuse where possible.
Our handset recycling programs generate thousands of cellular handsets each month. Most are reusable but some have reached the end of their useful life. Below are the general results of our recycling and processing activity.
Approximately 70% of recycled handsets have resale value and are refurbished by RMS or other refurbishers. This practice supplies handsets to developing wireless markets worldwide that are in need of affordable communication.
Approximately 20% of recycled handsets have very low resale value and are made available to law enforcement and victim services agencies through one of our partners, the 911 Cell Phone Bank. This partnership extends the useful life of older handsets beyond market demands.
Approximately 10% of recycled phones are damaged beyond repair or not economically feasible to repair. These handsets will be disposed of in one of three ways:
- Handsets will only be sold to customers located in developed OECD countries.
- Handsets will be broken down into functional parts (i.e. LCD, Keypad, etc.) for repair processes.
- Handsets will be sent for downstream management to an approved recycling partner
